The experiences this week that has been synonymous with burning of school dormitories were rather mixed, especially in Nakuru County, the focus of our Mission of  empowerment. In some cases, it was extremely difficult to meet institutional managers who were locked up in meetings discussing strategies of avoiding trouble in their schools.

Nevertheless, there are quite a number where we engaged in serious discussions on how learners in their schools should be handled. In line with the stressful situation in schools, it may be necessary to share our views on the likely causes of the fire incidents and probably what needs to be done. But first, what exactly could be the cause of the destruction by students? Will the government intervention through allowing a mid-terrm break provide a permanent solution?

The challenges bring to mind an experience some time ago.  On 21st May 2018, we landed in Machakos County for the week’s focus of our mission of empowerment in schools. We had already made a presentation and introduced our ideas during the April 2018 Machakos County KESSHA Conference in Mombasa. It was therefore easy to relate with the various institutional Managers.

Amongst them was that of Matungulu Boys High School (please allow me to name the institution this time), who had just been transfered from Kitui County. He needed immediade change in his then infamous school. It was known for constant strikes, destruction of school property, drug menace and other negativities that the principal couldn’t tolerate, which he analysed in very disturbing details.

Upon the revelations the principal wondered whether we have a solution for the same. We indicated that our empowerment solution HOLISTICALLY takes care of challenges in attitudes, focus, indiscipline and poor reading culture. The principal agreed that the challenges are of great concern, especially in his school. He felt that the solution should be capable of meeting their needs and was immediately set for 10.30 am – 1.00 pm  the following day, 22nd May 2018.

The participants included the form 3 and 4 students as well as their class teachers. Ever since, the seminar is still memorable for the following reasons. First, the teachers indicated that they had learnt lessons that they will continue applying in real life, as well as in school – one of them indicated that she is a talented poet and will strategize on how to excel on this area. Second, the  principal revealed to the Nairobi principals, he was sitting with during the 2018  National KESSHA Conference in Mombasa, that his school had already started  transforming after our empowerment session. His revelations had happened as I made a presentation in the national KESSHA Conference.

Third, the performance of Matungulu Boys High School started improving in 2018. Fourth, we have since been closely monitoring the trends in the school, which is no longer synonymous with the earlier negativities.  While recently conducting a seminar for a form 3 and 4 class of a girls’ school in the same area, students were surprised about how our efforts had transformed their neighborhood school.

Fifth, the same principal  of Matungulu Boyd High School recently indicated need for an empowerment session, especially for the current form four class  Actually, they are welcome once more whenever ready. Why these reverations?

The education mentality of pumping learners with knowledge and expecting that their performancev in examinations will determine success in their lives is completely outdated. It belongs to the 20th Century. In the 21st Century, each learner should be strategically aware of their direction in life, thus becoming properly focused. That  improves their attitudes thus minimizing STRESS, while in school. Reduction of stress naturally reduces the indiscipline currently associated with the  prevailing destructions in schools, doesn’t it?

Our empowerment strategy that happened in Matungulu Boys High School in 2018 is our standard for every school that has embraced our empowerment strategy right from the beginning. Numerous institutional managers of such schools, some still in this forum could attest to this.

On 8th November 2021, we are in yet another boys’ school in Machakos County, excecuting the same highly effective Empowerment Strategy that has spread in numerous schools across 12 counties so far.  More engagements of strategically aligning our future Leaders under your care still WELCOME, particularly with regard to saving the direction of the endangered Kenyan  boy child. Welcome once more!

FYI

In the Nakuru County this week, We encountered very interesting experiences. One principal who acquired our publications in 2018 ;could not understand why we try to find out how well the same are utilized in schools. “You are the first author I have ever witnessed doing follow ups. After explaining the reasons why, the principl immediately acquired copies of Living Beyond Survival: No More Tiptoeing in Life. This is quite inspiring, isn’t it?
