Our engagements this week involved empowerment of teachers on one day and students on the other, in two different schools, in Nairobi County. Needless to venture into details, there were great lessons learnt in each case that are worth sharing.

Incidentally, the empowerment of teachers has it’s own practical exercise that every participant must be involved in. It has always been very challenging since it’s inception many years ago. Seemingly, some participants become agitated for reasons that are best understood by those who have read about work principles in chapter 4 and 7 of the KICD approved Career Dynamics in the 21st Century. Remember the concept was used for architecture of the Competency Based Curriculum – CBC.

The principles advocated undoubtedly ensure that the CBC is a transformation strategy of the Kenyan Education System, only requiring panel beating of the implementation process. Hopefully, the team selected by the new government will have a clear understanding of the Philosophy of CBC, thus able to provide clear direction on the improvement of CBC. Thankfully, two members in the team, interacted with our publications, while at KICD and even thereafter.

Meanwhile, the practical exercise  during students’ seminars is equally interesting. A number of students are called upon to present about their likely purpose in life after school, including the reasons why, as well as what it entails. It also includes suggestions on careers that one would passionately avoid. On many occasions, participants never miss wishing to become engineers, doctors and lawyers amongst others.

Apparently, majority avoid ever becoming teachers though a few cases of those who love teaching have been noticed in the recent past. In one particular seminar, class teachers participating in the session were quite relieved when dislike for teaching was tackled extensively. How?

Did you know that only 10% of teachers chose the career on their own volition? A further 40-50% ended up liking teaching, thus leaving a balance of 40% dispassionate teachers. But, in one seminar for teachers, we observed something rather interesting. Of the 10 teachers who joined the career on their own volition, 2 of them would never choose the  teaching career, were they to start all over again.

Nevertheless, it is important for all to understand that most teachers would have loved to become engineers, doctors, lawyers and other prestigious careers. Largely, they were influenced by extrinsic factors and somehow didn’t meet the expected requirements. That is why about 40% of teachers are dispassionate about the career, having missed what they desired. Their students notice this and are somehow influenced likewise. But, can that be reversed?

Continued feedback indicates that some  teachers who have read Career Dynamics in the 21st Century, as well as Living Beyond Survival: No More Tiptoeing in Life, have ended up re-aligning their careers. An example is a teacher who rejoined school for a Diploma in Counselling Psychology as revealed @ https://youtu.be/DD9R0e8BIbc

By the way, who said that there is anything wrong with teaching? This is a NOBLE or NURTURING career, just like those high end professions. That is why best lawyers, doctors, engineers, accountants etc end up becoming teachers, even if on a part-time basis. They in other words continue contributing towards the improvement of the welfare of humanity, don’t they?

So, the cure for career dispassion, which is almost as good as one undergoing punishment, is within reach. Actually, this dispassion should not be allowed to happen throughout our lifetimes, isn’t it?

FYI
The main idea behind the formulation of the Competency Based Curriculum is to help Kenyans to transit from 20th to 21st Century Mentalities, in line with global trends. That is why the New Government now focuses on improvement of implementation modalities of the CBC.

Sometimes in August 2022, I came up with some quick fixes of CBC, which can easily be part of the reports for the first 2 months as revealed @ https://youtu.be/5vIR69v50Ss
Let’s compare notes once the team presents it’s initial reports.

Meanwhile, welcome for our continuing Empowerment for teachers as well as students, so far embraced in schools spread in 12 Counties.
