Our interactions this week was with institutional managers in Muranga and Nyeri Counties. In the latter, we only managed to reach out to a few in the southern tip of the county. What was of great interest in all situations was discussions about the Competency Based Curriculum – CBC.
Of great concern is that not many institutional managers know what may happen in their schools as from January 2022. Will there be double intake of the Grade 6 proceeding to Junior Secondary School and form ones joining secondary school? The truth is that no institutional Manager is expecting or is ready for that scenario. It’s all about wait and see situations. Why so?
Sometimes in August 2022, I shared my views in this forum, on what went wrong regarding CBC. I also developed respective You Tube content that has circulated widely.

The same has also been forwarded to various education authorities. It was therefore not surprising, to learn that teachers have now made presentations to the effect that Grade 7 and 8 students should be domiciled in primary school and recognized as Upper Primary School Students. This was clearly articulated in my August content.
Meanwhile, there is disturbing ongoing confusion witnessed in the media. Inconceivably, numerous Kenyans portraying themselves as education experts are still indicating that CBC should be scrapped. Luckily,l moderate ones are advocating the moderation of the implementation of the CBC. In this regard, it has become necessary to revisit this matter, perhaps for the last time.
Inevitably, everybody should understand that CBC should be perceived in three dimensions. First and most critical is the philosophy – the why, what and how. Second, is the technicalities and third, the infrastructure. Except the philosophy, everything else has so far, largely gone wrong. Why?
The philosophy is not easily comprehensible by all. In fact, it is doubtful whether the whole team charged with the CBC review has the necessary tools that can easily facilitate the process. Since conceptualizing our Bottom-up Empowerment Strategy, which eventually led us to secondary schools, we have interacted with all levels of educationists – that is primary schools, secondary schools and universities.
The vast majority of educationists are still influenced by 20th Century mentalities of acquiring knowledge, so that graduates can acquire the much needed jobs. But, is that really being achieved? Obviously not, since the 21st Century Mentalities are about aligning education with natural orientations of students.
The latter has nothing to do with market demands, which are easily sorted out, once the natural orientations are embraced and put into practice. Insights on these realities are clearly articulated in the KICD approved Career Dynamics in the 21st Century, which was also used for architecture of the CBC.
When public outcry against CBC became very pronounced around August 2021, we took the trouble of saving the CBC through providing free copies of the 3rd edition of Career Dynamics in the 21st Century to Professor Magoha himself, in September 2021 and four other key authorities in MOE Hdqtrs, Jogoo House. One week after, the good profesor condemned those fighting CBC as day dreamers.
In October 2021, the concept was put in the 10th Floor Resource Center, Jogoo House. Those researching on the transformation of the education system, through Masters Degrees and PhDs, now have access to easy resource content. Hopefully, the CBC review team will also have access to the same.
Most importantly, every education stakeholder should realize that the main objective of CBC is to transit Kenyans from the 20th Century to 21st Century Paradigms, in line with global dynamics. As such the 8-4-4 education system is out of date and is now being modified through the CBC.
Once the implementation and technicalities of CBC are appropriately reviewed, this country will be headed towards the right direction not only on the education front, but also economy and other spheres. We believe that those who have embraced our seminars for teachers as well as students can easily confirm these assertions. Those who have embraced the ideas articulated through Career Dynamics in the 21st Century are equally aligned with the Century Paradigms, aren’t they?
FYI
Our very first interactions with Universities was in June 2013. The professor who taught me total quality management at the turn of the century invited me to address his soon to graduate students. They needed to know how to apply the lessons on Total Quality Management in their real life. The “Quality Begins with You ” presentation, eventually became chapter 6 of ” Career Dynamics in the 21st Century.”
The publication eventually led to speaking engagements in University of Nairobi on 21st September 2016 and 28th July 2017. The same publication led to an interview on Kenyatta University TV Station in January 2016 – Check https://youtu.be/7ugg17N6978
Still, we were engaged by the Higher Loans Education Board – HELB on a speaking engagement on 17th May 2017 – Check https://youtu.be/IFVq2WXvrMc
Our observations during these engagements enabled us to have clear understanding on the challenges in the entire education system.
That led us to concentrating in empowerment in secondary schools where disempowerment challenges are captured and sorted out before going overboard.
