Before the advent of COVID-19 in 2020, December holidays were synonymous with relaxition especially for teachers and other educationists. There were no examinations at all, as the ones ongoing. If anything, only those engaged in marking of exams were busy on the exercise.

The rest of Kenyans were busy, variously celebrating the holidays. One thing was quite common. There were numerous weddings that were ongoing in varying churches spread in different parts of the country. But, what is the current situation?

This week, I had been invited to attend two church weddings, which I respectively honoured. Incidentally, both cases involved renewal of wedding vows. One case involved a gentleman in his late forties and his slightly younger wife. The other was a younger couple in their thirties.

Apparently, there concerns in both cases. It turned out that weddings have become very rare in the recent years. “Research needs to be conducted on what could have led to this situation that poses a threat to the continuity of the society,” one Reverend indicated.

That statement led to murmurs in the congregation, which means it caught people’s attention. In my case, the same has kept my mind wondering what could actually have happened.

In that regard, my attention has been drawn to the findings of the Kenyan population census conducted in 2019. It was revealed that the rate of population growth in Kenya has dropped from 29% to 22%. Why could that be happening?

Chapter 3 of the KICD approved Career Dynamics in the 21st Century, brings out an interesting scenario. The level of success in our lives is influenced by two mentalities. On one hand is Scarcity Mentality and Abundance Mentality on the other.

When we make the right choices during our empowerment process, we become influenced by abundance mentality. We believe that we can easily achieve our desires in life. Making the right choices leads us into following our passion or purpose in life. It eventually becomes easy to achieve our desires.

The alternative is Scarcity Mentality. When we make the wrong choices, we end up believing that we can’t achieve whatever we want in life. It becomes a situation of survival for the fittest, just like the animal Kingdom. It becomes each man for himself and God for us all. Does that sound familiar?

Today, more than 40% of able bodied Kenyans are jobless. More than 50% of Kenyan University Graduates are either unemployed or largely unemployable. Why so?

The school system is up-to now influenced by the thinking of the 20th Century. It is simply about getting educated and acquiring certificates, which people still believe will lead to lucrative jobs. Sadly, that is no longer the case.

The challenges associated with the school system, easily spill over to the society. That includes joblessness, a great contribution particularly, towards the disempowerment of the boy child. It is him who decides whether to venture into family life or not. And the girl child? She will have no time for a dis-empowered boy child. Incidentally, success today is largey measured in terms of monetary value under our control. All these challenges are largely associated with influences of the scarcity mentality.

The good news is that Competency Based Curriculum – CBC is gradually aligning the education system towards abundance mentality. This is in line with Paradigms of the 21st century that are equally applicable to those still in the 8-4-4 education system. Luckily, positive results will be noticeable, once the CBC is implemented as envisaged. Keep in mind that there are three dimensions of the CBC.

The first one is the philosophical perspectives, which seem to have been clearly understood. That is why the current government embarked on educational reforms rather than abandoning the CBC, as had been indicated. The second and third perspectives revolve around the technicalities and infrastructure of the CBC.

If CBC is implemented properly, empowerment of those undergoing the education system will naturally be aligned with abundance mentality. That is why implementation of CBC should involve continuous improvement, based on the outcomes continually noticed. Societal challenges will apparently be sorted out, once the education system follows the right track.
