Have you ever thought of the impact of rote learning to the national situation? One of the greatest inhibitions of our education system is occasioned by rote learning. Students are taught how to memorize the knowledge disseminated through their teachers, as well as that acquired from books and other reading material.

The higher the ability to memorize, the more the likely chances of excelling in examinations and even life thereafter. Unfortunately that knowledge is rarely put into use, once exams are completed. Why?

No efforts are put in place to take students through a process of application of knowledge acquired. Eventually, graduates end up becoming as good as robbots. They can only act as instructed, since they never learnt how to think and apply knowledge.

Inability to apply knowledge impacts greatly to performance. That is why those securing jobs are expected to acquire stipulated working experience. The more the experience, the more it is assumed that there will be likelyhood of expected performance.

Later, this assumption leads to great challenges, especially when high performing employees are promoted to higher positions, especially those requiring new skills. An example is a high performance classroom teacher being promoted into a school principal.

The new position requires, management skills, leadership skills and people skills amongst others. Have you ever encountered principals who have eventually given up and requested to be transfered back to full-time classroom teaching? Personally, I have met some. I am still familiar to one, who has in the recent past become a deputy principal, as he nears retirement.

FYI
A great experience this week is indeed worth sharing. After testing the efficacy of our unique bottom up 21st Century empowerment strategy, we realized that choices made by students at form 2, are extremely critical.

It becomes worse when they are influenced by extrinsic factors. This leads to disempowerment of students while not only in school, but also beyond. It is for this reason that we developed a seminar titled “sustainable Life Strategy,” that is appropriate as a follow-up for students in form four, who arlier enjoyed the one titled “Creating the Future Today,” while in form two.

A recent beneficiary of these two seminars is the current form 4 Class of a Kiambu County based Extra-County School. We are keenly looking forward to the eventual performance of this school, with regard to the KCSE exams of 2022. Meanwhile, more schools are encouraged to embrace this currently ABSOLUTELY FREE second seminar that links the form 2 and 4 class experiences.
