Testing of our unique 21st Century empowerment strategy is in the public domain, especially through the 3rd edition of Career Dynamics in the 21st Century. This was initially through our empowerment seminar in State House Girls High School (More @ https://youtu.be/3dKFi3kxzOE) for the outgoing form one class in 2015, as they undertook selection of subjects was a great eye opener.
That experience led to similar ones in 2016 and 2017, courtesy of an exited school administration. The effectiveness of the strategy came to light in 2018, when the class we empowered in 2018 led to Statehouse Girls becoming one of the most improved school in the KCSE of 2018. No wonder, numerous schools ended up visiting Statehouse Girls High School for benchmarking experiences.
Readers may however not know that the testing of our empowerment strategy then only relates to how improved performance is achieved not only for individual students, but also as an institutional culture. There was still a other aspects of testing that were beneficial to the school system.
Performance was not enough. More needed to be experienced in schools as part of the empowerment strategy of the 21st Century.. Particularly, what was to contribute to a sustainable culture of desired performance? In our view we felt that improvement of students’ attitudes, focus/strategic direction and leading culture could lead to invaluable benefits.
Reduced indiscipline would naturally lead to improved performance. With this perspective in mind, we were good to go. We initially empowered schools in Nairobi and Kiambu Counties. We kept hoping that educational authorities were to make Career Dynamics in the 21st Century as a must read in schools, but that was never to be.
Consequently, we as from 2018 ventured into other counties that were beyond vicinity of the city of Nairobi. One of the earliest beneficiaries was Machakos County, where our publications were easily embraced upon interactions with the principals during the April 2018 KESSHA Conference in Mombasa.
As a follow-up we on 22nd May 2018, landed into Matungulu High School, near Tala in Machakos County. It was easy to to engage with the school principal, who could easily relate with our Mombasa experience. Immediately, the principal acquired some copies of Career Dynamics in the 21st Century, but had some reverations to make.
Principal: Thanks for your publications. We however need to share our ongoing challenges all the same.
Me: We will be happy to know about them. Which are they?
Principal: I just joined the school recently, but I am quite uncomfortable with what I found. Particularly, the school is well known for not only strikes and destruction of property, but also drug addiction for students. Poor student attitudes and mediocre performance are also of great concern. Do you know of any way that these challenges can be addressed?
Me:Sorry about those experiences. The good news however is that they can all be sorted out at once.
Principal: What do you mean?
Me: We only need to take your students through a 2 &1/2 hour session, which will address attitudes, focus and learning culture. Once those are addressed, Indiscipline levels will subside, while performance will improve.
Principal: Why are you so confident of the solutions?
Me: They equally apply to National, Extra- County, County and Sub- County Schools. In any case, the content and reading materials are the same in Kenyan Schools. The only difference is the infrustructure and intellectual capacity of students.
Principal: Can we have the session straight away?
Me: It is now 4.00 pm. I suggest we meet tomorrow at 10.00 am for the same.
Principal: Agreed. We shall prepare the form 3 and four classes for the same.
Me: Please ensure to include their class teachers as well.
On Wednesday 23rd May 2018, we had a great session with the form 3 and 4 classes plus their class teachers as well. One month after, we learnt from some principals of Nairobi County, that the Matungulu BHS Principal was excited listening to me during my presentation to the National KESSHA conference of June 2018. ” I know that speaker. He recently transformed the culture of our school,” stated the excited principal.
In 2018, the mean-grade of the school shot from 3.40 in 2017 to 3.71 in 2021. The same has annually continued improving and is now heading towards mean-grade of 5 and above. Most importantly, the culture of high levels of indiscipline, poor attitudes and poor focus is no more.
No wonder, Matungulu Boys High School enganged us for yet another form 3 and 4 seminar on 8th June 2022. Seemingly, no school administrators need to crack their heads seeking for strategies of performance Improvement and institutional culture change, when tested solutions are easily within reach.
JFYI
Matungulu Boys High School is not the only one that has confidence in our empowerment solutions. Another boys’ school in Machakos similarly engaged us in March 2020 and November 2021. Also, a leading girls school did the same in March 2019 and February 2020.
Three other girls schools engaged us for similar seminars in February 2020, May 2021 and most recently on 9th June 2022. Desired performance is constantly achieved once our recommendations are implemented. More engagements from schools in varrying Counties are SIMILARY WELCOME!!
