Congratulations to all the 2021 Candidates of the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education irrespective of the performance achieved. In any case, all are heading to Secondary Schools based on the 100% transition policy. Nonetheless, it is worthwhile noting the efforts of the outstanding achievers all the same.

The only concern is that some of them have already determined their eventual Careers even at this very early stage of their empowerment process, as learnt from the media. Of great concern is that majority have indicated that they will emulate their parents or other relatives, who seem quite successful in their careers.

This ideally means that they will be influenced by extrinsic factors in total disregard of intrinsic orientations. Does this mean that they will equally be successful? Certainly not because we are all genetically different even when close blood relatives are considered.

It is important therefore to be aware that all should understand their natural orientations, as a key attribute of determining the eventual careers or related pathways. This is critical particularly if we consider that technical skills largely achieved from the school system contribute to only 15% of desired success in life, while the balance of 85 % is associated with soft skills, as learnt from Dale Carnegie, a well known American Author and founder of the Dale Carnegie Institute.

Did you know that the Competency Based Curriculum-CBC largely focuses on early understanding and constant development of this foremost soft skill of following personal natural orientations? Just this week, a parent who has a grade one child sought to know why assignments are today a responsibility of the parent and students too.

The truth is that the education based on the 20th Century dynamics or paradigms largely revolves between the teacher and the student. Ironically, the parent most often ends up controlling the eventual direction of the education, more so with regard to career issues. Many students have ended up losing strategic direction in this regard.

The good news however is that when parents get involved in the empowerment process of their children, they will end up becoming aware of the paradigms of the 21st Century. The eventual success of the student will become a joint responsibility of the teacher as well as an informed parent. These were the lessons shared with the parent with a grade one child. The parent became quite satisfied with the explanations.

Shortly, the CBC students are heading towards lower secondary school. The parent will have been part of the empowerment process all along. Is the secondary school teacher adequately prepared for these 21st Century Students?

The 21st Century paradigms are still a hard nut to crack for the teachers. The good news is that once the same are clearly understood, they will benefit the teacher even at personal levels. Why so?

All that teachers require is change that will be led by new knowledge that will yield new perceptions. That will lead to new attitudes followed by new habits. Repeated habits will result to new behaviours, the eventuality being new culture.

In the recent past, we have continued getting feedback regarding teachers re-entering school after our empowerment seminars ( see example @ https://youtu.be/cMhRi4V350Y). In other situations, we have encountered excited educational administrators whose institutional performance has continued rising to new levels, after our seminars as is clearly evident @ https://youtu.be/u9OvLj1mQms

Seemingly, it may not be necessary for heads to be cracked while in search of performance improvement strategies. The truth is that it is now easy to fast-track the benefits attributable to aligning education with the paradigms of the 21st Century, Isn’t it?
