Our empowerment strategy guided by the KICD approved concept titled Career Dynamics in the 21st Century was undoubtedly well thought out. Remember, the same concept was used for architecture of the Competency Based Curriculum. This strategy continues becoming a reality as as recently proved in a school based in Machakos County (view You Tube Channel Version https://youtu.be/XPjMRCtB8wo).

But first, what majority may not realize is that our concept was meant to perfect a bottom-up empowerment strategy, which was visualized around year 2007. As explained in our YouTube Channel (@ https://youtu.be/yK7y2AWBu3E), organizational culture change solutions tended to be affected negatively by newly recruited employees, especially those direct from the school system.

This Bottom-Up Empowerment Strategy mainly focused towards aligning those in school with the right attitudes and strategic direction particularly. It’s only then that the befitting human capital can graduate from the school system. The strategy has in our own small way continued working well, since we started implementing the same.

Perhaps, that is why this strategy that leads to improvement of performance standards, has variously been acknowledged by educational authorities. For example ….”We wish to commend your endeavors of improving education standards in the country,”…wrote the KNEC CEO and former KICD Research Director, on 15th Jan 2019, upon request for performance statistics of the schools we had empowered in 2018.

The empowerment efforts are still ongoing. Alongside, we after every seminar keep providing written recommendations on what needs to be done to maximize on benefits of our empowerment strategy. Foremost of them all is embracing a teachers’ seminar soon after that of students. Why?

We know very well that only 10% of teachers joined the career by choice. A further 40-50% ended up becoming passionate while at work. So, a balance of 40% are totally dispassionate and largely having challenged attitudes. That is what we focus towards improving, for the best interests of students as well. However, our recommendations are not always implemented.

But whenever they are, the results are always amazing. Incidentally, Fr. Heeran Girls High School, Machakos County approached our empowerment strategy differently. Having booked an empowerment session on 28th May 2021, the school requested for inclusion of parents, who were present for an ACADEMIC DAY, in the school.

Class teachers and some departmental heads were also in the session. Alongside, one of the teachers indicated that the students were seemingly being over-trained. This is understandable since our empowerment strategy is compliant with CBC, which most teachers are yet to fully comprehend. Luckily, the principal who was in the session and familiar with our writings through this forum, as well as our publications, was comfortable with the seminar flow.

After the usual evaluation report, the school continued implementing the lessons learnt. By September or October, a follow up meeting with the Principal revealed that the performance in internal examinations had continued improving. Perhaps, this was occasioned by the fact that students, teachers as well as parents were all very clear of the new strategic direction of the education system, that is aligned with paradigms of the 21st Century.

A visit to the school this week revealed the following results.
Mean-grade shot from 4.3 – 5.6 (D+ – C)
Students qualifying to join university shot from 6 in 2020 to 26 in 2021. The excitement occasioned by improved performance in the school is still ongoing. The thought process of the Competency Based Curriculum is without doubt still workable in the 8-4-4 system isn’t it?

JFYI
In early June, we will be back to the same county for empowerment of 4th form students of one school, where we in May 2018, successfully confirmed efficacy of our unique strategy of improving attitudes, focus (strategic direction) learning culture, thus reducing INDISCIPLINE. The eventual result is improvement of performance, not only of students, but also of the school.

The performance of this specific school has been on the upward trend all through. In this regard, the population of the school has doubled from 450 students to 800 plus. We are looking forward to continually contributing to the progress of this school, amongst all others that embrace our unique empowerment strategy.
