Are you a parent of a 2021 KCSE candidate? Even if not, you are definitely a stakeholder particularly on this issue of career dilemmas. Upon release of the 2021 KCSE exams, there have been quite some concerns about what next for most of the candidates. What university course will be most appropriate is one of the foremost dilemmas.

Voluminous writings have been published in the media on this subject. Seemly though, most proposed solutions are associated with extrinsic factors, especially for A students. Courses assumed to lead towards rewarding job opportunities, based on the market trends are largely put into consideration. The most common are medicine, engineering as well as law courses, as has been the tradition.

In the process, have you ever considered why the school system continues churning out Mediocre Engineers, Doctors and even Lawyers? The good news is that today, it is possible to know who is NATURALLY, a doctor, engineer, Lawyer, Marketer, Accountant, Journalist and so on. But, why are the majority still stuck on the mentalities of the 20th Century, even in this third decade of the 21st Century?

The main objective of people acquiring education has been to eventually secure lucrative jobs. The same can lead to making big-time money, thus presumably becoming successful in life. Those mentalities have not changed, or have they? Once out of school, further interest in acquiring any new knowledge loses any meaning. Why so?

This objective associated with education is totally obsolete, especially in a fast changing, competitive and technologically oriented world. Ideally, everybody was naturally talented one way or the other even long before the advent of the information knowledge era of the 20th Century.

During the 20th Century, only those whose talents were explicit, were able to realize and apply the same. There were others who could identify the talents and disregard the same, based on societal influences or inability to offer the same to the market place. Did you know that this is what continues leading to unemployment of even educated Kenyans?

Before the aspirations of the CBC become realities, it is important to be aware of the factors that will STILL lead to people aligning themselves towards unleashing their full potential. The first one is aligning themselves with their natural orientations. What is one naturally good at compared to others? What about personality? Is one an introvert or extrovert?

The two are great considerations especially with regard to some careers. As an example, one will experience serious challenges as an accountant if an extrovert. Secondly, passion must be put into consideration. What activity can one spend endlessness hours enjoying him or herself? Alternatively, what is it that one hates with a passion?

The Late President Nelson Mandela for example passionately hated apartheid and was ready to sacrifice even his life in the war against the same. That passion led him to become not only the first black South African President, but also a global icon, inspite of the suffering experienced. Likewise, there are people who become doctors just to contribute towards helping those in pain. In other situations, there are those who become lawyers just to help the downtrodden members of the society.

Thirdly, there are those who consider the advise of respectable mentors. Did you know that there are people whose interests, hobbies etc are noticed by those interact with them? As such, it seemingly makes sense to consider these attributes when imagining one’s eventual contribution towards improvement of the welfare of the society.

Keep in mind that there is no need of taking chances as one considers the courses aligned to eventual career, for those still undergoing the empowerment process. The same should be perceived as a personal life strategy or better still purpose in life. That means engagement in activities that will be associated with a whole lifetime, isn’t it?
