Have you ever had intentions of venturing into politics? Personally, I have no interests of even writing about the same. Why so? I learnt from Nicholo Machiavelli that in politics, there are no guiding principles, through his book titled “The Prince.” It is about being number ONE, whatever it takes.
Nevertheless, politics control our lives as has been the case this week, largely synonymous of enormous anxiety. Seemingly, we have all been held into ransom by the political situation. The entire school system had to give way to the electoral process.
Alongside, there have been those who have been contesting for various political posts. They have had their campaign teams and ardent supporters too. Others have just been normal voters, whereas there are those who never participated at all. What about teachers?
Congrats to the Nyeri Governer who joined politics directly from teaching. Congratulating Principal Peter Orero, now Legislator of Kibra, is also in order. We first met at Upper Hill Secondary School, where I was once a parent. Not long ago, we met in Dagoreti High School and had a lot of fun discussing his interest in politics.
All in all, electoral process is something that we should all embrace and honour every 5 years as constitutionally mandated. Whatever, the eventual results from the voting process, we need to not only congratulate the winners, but also appreciate the losers.
Thereafter, it’s time to continue building the nation with the new leaders, who have emerged from the electoral system. It doesn’t matter how we voted. Majority of us could have been influenced by emotions rather than our minds. We could have been influenced by the usual copy and paste tendency of Kenyans, thus simply doing what others were doing.
Such are the circumstances that lead to voting waves associated with different areas or regions of the country. One of the voting waves was quite interesting. The whole of the Mt. Kenya region spoke with one voice. Anybody who spoke a language different from the predominant party, was swept away by the voting wave.
The concern is, were voters influenced by party ideologies or those of the party leaders? Further, is it that all those in different parties were not credible to lead or their party ideologies were wanting? These are issues that need to be considered by each of us, as democracy continues growing in our country.
Particularly, when all is said and done, electoral losers in Mt. Kenya region need to learn some lessons from some individuals, who overcame the voting wave, noticed in the region. The same lessons apply to those who won, if at all the winning spirit will be sustainable.
Particularly, how did Governor Kawira Mwangaza as an independent, manage to fight the UDA wave to win the Meru County Seat of power? How did Kamau Murango become a Jubilee Senator in Kirinyaga County?
More still, how did Dr. Shadrack Mwiti, Imenti South, Meru, Njuguna Kiarahu, Olkalau, Nyandarua and Zacharia Kwenya, Kinagop, Nyandarua manage to beat the UDA wave, being followers of the seemingly unpopular Jubilee Party?
Imagine, these Legislators particularly, are only three out of a total of about sixty four, for the whole region! Even without principles, there are certain attributes of political Leadership that need to be carefullly observed, for sustainable relationship with the electorate, isn’t it?
