The Friday before 2022 Elections, I was in Embu County. The engagement involved conducting a in seminar for a Girls’ school, where the participants included teachers, all students and parents of form 2 class (check https://youtu.be/92flw9tN5Cc).
Upon illustrating our very simplified concept of success that borrows from biblical, philosophical and scientific principles, I noticed there was a Reverend, who was wearing a Collar. Alongside, I posed a question, whose answer was expected from all participants.
Which country in this world could be applying these principles that we have just learnt? I asked. Some students indicated America, others Japan and other wealthy Nations. I asked parents and teachers whether they had different ideas, but they seemed to have all been in agreement with the students.
At this point, I sought to know who is associated with the historical and cultural lessons that we learn from both the Old and New Testament of the Bible. In unison, everybody said the Jews or Israelis.
Immediately, I stated that the culture of the Jews is what has led them to immense success in every sphere of their lives, in a country that is a tenth, the size of Kenya.
Notably, Israel is 70% desert land. They are leaders in warfare, science, technology, Agriculture, medicine and Education amongst others.
Did you know that Jews are highly respected influencers of activities in the great American Nation? In fact they play a great role in the continued advancement of the American economy. That is why the American leadership have a great soft spot on the Jewish nation.
Anyway, upon reverations through the seminar, I asked the Reverend to confirm whether he agreed with my assertions. “I absolutely agree,” said the Reverend, who was in the end invited to appreciate the lessons learnt during the session.
While still fresh from the Embu experience, I was on the following Saturday, engaged in discussions with yet another Reverend, in a family gathering. She reminded me of the readings in St. Luke’s Gospel. When Jesus was being crucified, there were 2 thieves besides him. One belittled Jesus and asked him to save himself, if he is truly the son of God. The other recognized Jesus as son of God and asked him to remember him when up there.
Seemingly, it doesn’t matter what you do in life as long as you are a christian, there is a chance that you can repent your sins, and ask for forgiveness as the the thieve perceived. This was interestingly upheld by the Saturday Reverend.
In that case, remember that we are 80% a Christian oriented Country, aren’t we? But, is our reputation commensurate with that scenario, especially if compared with the nation of Israel?
Meanwhile, having Studied CRE, based on St. Luke’s Gospel for 1 year and African Religious Education for another year, while in High School, my view is that Kenyans treat biblical principles as theories. Our situation could definitely be different had the principles contributed to evolution of a strong culture, as is the case with the Israeli Nation, isn’t it?
FYI
The schedules in the school system are agreebly quite tight. The concern of every Institutional Manager is about covering the school syllabus, isn’t it?
However, why cover the syllabus without any consideration as to whether the students have the right focus/strategic direction, right attitudes and therefore likely achievement of the desired performance?
We rightly believe that those institutional managers that have sacrificed the few hours that we use to address those critical empowerment attributes (right attitudes, focus/strategic direction) have it easy, as they continue preparing our future leaders.
More institutions still welcome!!!
