The Women’s International Day this week, attracted me to Captain Ruth Karauri. She had made headlines when she perfectly landed a Kenya Airways plane at the London Heathrow airport, in the midst of a storm last month.
Kenyans applauded her proficient performance including highly praising KQ for the achievement. Ruth Karauri is a pilot with Kenya Airways with the rank of captain. She got assimilated by KQ after undergoing training at the national carrier, soon after finishing form 4.
Captain Karauri has continually worked her way to the top and is now a Boeing 737 captain, who flies the B787. She speaks of her desire to become a pilot from a very tender age. Her main aim was not really to fly, but to wear the uniforms worn by pilots.
Imagine Ruth dreamt of becoming a pilot at the age of 8 years! Upon finishing high school, she scored a straight A and was waiting to pursue a degree in Electrical Engineering. She says that she would not have known how to use the same.
Luckily, the father knew that Ruth wanted to become a pilot, once she grew up. So, once he saw a Kenya Airways advert on trainee Pilots, he handed the newspaper to his daughter. This enabled the girl to apply to become a trainee pilot for Kenya Airways.
Ruth was invited for her first Kenya Airways interview among 3000 candidates. This gave her little or no hope at all. Later, her second interview this time alongside 250 participants fell in place.
The final interview involved 60 participants and Ruth became one of the 15, who were eventually selected. Everything fell in place without any efforts or support from anybody, including her parents. The selection news was shocking because it would be Ruth’s first time of ever flying, which also marked the beginning of her career.
Today, Ruth whose age is about 35-40 years is amongst the 40 women out of a total of 400 pilots serving Kenya Airways. Likewise, she is a mother of 2 and spouse of a former pilot, who ventured into other interests
This KQ captain is naturally an inspiration to many women. Most importantly, she proves that there are no gender boundaries with regard to careers. Ideally, one only needs to understand his or her brain orientation and align the same with the respective careers.
That is why the Competency Based Curriculum – CBC architecture is adopted on the basis of aligning students with their respective career pathways. Most importantly that alignment needs to be eventually aligned with personalized passion. By chance, Captain Ruth was appropriatly aligned in all perspectives, a situation that has contributed greatly to her career progression.
Luckily, nobody should any more rely on chances in the 21st Century. It doesn’t matter whether one follows the CBC or 8-4-4 curriculum. The empowerment or alignment strategy of every 21st Century student should be the same. It is the school system and the policy implenters that are answerable for any misgivings on this empowerment strategy, isn’t it?
FYI
Our first engagement coming week regards helping a 40 year old Kenyan to overcome her career dilemmas. The lady lost passion as a banker and is now a Masters Degree Student. Is she on the right track? That is the challenge.
Keep in mind that continuing feedback has indicated that teachers have found the need of re-entering school for re-alignment of their knowledge, after our seminar titled “Re- Creating the Future Today.” To confirm this, just check https://youtu.be/cMhRi4V350Y
