Why LEADERSHIP PRACTICE In The 21st CENTURY Continues Being A GREAT CHALLENGE

About two weeks ago, I decided to attend a meeting of the Kenya Institute of Management – KIM, a professional body, where I have been a member, since 2006. It was important to listen to the presentation titled Leadership Practice in the 21st Century.

Apparently, the guest speaker was none other than the then University Vice Chancellor, who wrote the first foreword for our publication titled “Living Beyond Survival: No More Tiptoeing in Life.” More still, the second foreword was written by the current CEO of the KIM, who was also expected to be present in the forum.

Meanwhile, I have had a long professional relationship with KIM. It is through the monthly Management Magazine of KIM that my very first article titled “The Management Challenge in a Thieving Nation” was published in June 2007 ( Online, it can still be googled as “A Thieving Nation”). Thereafter, many more of my articles were published in the same Magazine.

Alongside, I became constantly engaged as a Company of the Year Award consultant for KIM around 2007 – 2009. As such, I have maintained a good relationship with this professional body, even as CEOS keep transiting from the organization. As expected, I did meet the 2 authorities who wrote the forewords for our publication.

Listening to the presentation on leadership in the 21st Century, was quite interesting. The guest speaker, who is now a Professor, took members through the meaning of Leadership, the character of a leader, the roles of a leader and how leadership is expected to be successfully executed in the 21st Century.

Obviously, there was comparison of how leadership happened in the 20th Century. But have Kenyans transited from the paradigms of the 20th Century? The essence of the presentation was to help the participants to understand how the leadership transformation should happen.

The Professor finalized his presentation with a question that participants were to keep considering. Are leaders born or made? Immediately, I was the first person to make my observations. First, I commended the Professor for the insights on leadership in the 21st Century.

Then, I once again profusely thanked the Professor and the KIM CEO for the forewords they wrote for my publication, which I indicated had answers to the question on whether leaders are born or made. Finally, I turned to the participants, whom I informed that leadership practice in Kenya is not easy. Why so?

Most people are still guided by the paradigms of the 20th Century, whereby education was and still is about eventually obtaining lucrative jobs. Luckily, the Competency Based Curriculum – CBC, is helping Kenyans to transit to the 21st Century Paradigms.

It is therefore critical for all to familialize with the Philosophy of the CBC. The good news is that this philosophy is easy to comprehend for those who read our first publication titled Career Dynamics in the 21st Century, which was used for architecture of the CBC.

Immediately, the Professor revealed that he was a director at KICD when the CBC was being formulated. He also confirmed that the content of our publication, which he had read while still new, is actually aligned with the CBC. He finally encouraged the participants to acquire copies of our publications for more insights.

Eventually, the remarks of the KIM CEO, were quite inspiring. “It is important to appreciate efforts of KIM Members who have experienced outstanding achievements. Please make good use of the publications authored by this member,” he insinuated.
Why share this?

The empowerment strategy articulated through Career Dynamics in the 21st Century as well as Living Beyond Survival: No More Tiptoeing in Life, is not meant for the school system only. It is still invaluable for those outside school, wishing to align themselves with the paradigms of the 21st Century.
