Sadly, we learnt of and witnessed a school that experienced burning of a dormitory In Embu County, just about two weeks ago. It was not clear whether the burning was accidental or caused by students. Nevertheless, the experience was disheartening to school administrators in the schools within the locality.
This incidence brings to mind, a discussion we recently had with a principal in Nyeri County. Upon confirming that some of the recommendations made after our seminar were yet to be implemented, I urged the principal to take them seriously. Why?
The key objectives in our empowerment sessions in schools include improvement of attitudes, focus and reading culture. Challenges on those attributes leads to high levels of indiscipline, which inevitably lead to mediocre performance not only in school, but also thereafter.
Particularly, it is important to ensure that teachers and students are on the same wavelength, with regard to empowerment issues. Remember that only 10% of teachers ventured into the profession by choice. Largely, the profession was of third rate consideration compared to others.
Alongside, 40-50% of teachers ended up liking the career and settling down as necessary. So, a balance of 40% of teachers are still dispassionate about their career, thus undergoing the usual disempowerment challenges.
Worryingly, they unknowingly influence students and other teachers negatively. Could they be contributing to some of the challenges in the education system? Being aware of these situations has been quite an inspiration to me.
That is why I am ever on the move whenever schools are in session. In any case, I am guided by some serious biblical principles which every educationist should be aware of. Why?
The book of 1st Peter says ” use your God given gifts to serve others. Further, Mathew 25: 29 says ” the little you have will be taken away and given to others,” whereas verse 30 says ” there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” That is if we don’t use our God given gifts. These are not theories as some may imagine.
They are natural principles just as day follows night. Imperatively, every educationist should in this 21st Century be responsible for nurturing the natural gifts of those under their care – the gifts are either phisical or intellectual. As such, just pumping these future leaders with knowledge, based on policy guidelines is not only inadequate, but also defeatist, isn’t it?
JFYI
My visit to Muranga this week, to conduct a seminar for one of the County Schools for Girls, was quite exciting. We visited a number of schools thereafter. Alongside, we leant that one of the principals, whose Extra-County school engaged us for a teachers’ seminar, some years ago, has recently been elevated to head a renown national school. Quite exciting, isn’t it?
In another school, we met the former principal of a Sub-County school that we empowered a few years ago, has been elevated to head an extra – County School. What is of interest is that the previous school has been a popular benchmarking destination for schools, from different parts of the country.
We are eagerly monitoring the impact of this transfer, especially with regard to the new school. Meanwhile, our empowerment mission through seminars for teachers or students, is still ongoing. WELCOME!!!
